Connect with FileZilla

GetData delivers request data through a secure SFTP folder. Use FileZilla, a free client for Windows, macOS and Linux, to download your data or, if you supply data, to upload it.

1Install FileZilla Client

Download FileZilla Client for Windows, macOS or Linux from the official site: filezilla-project.org. On Linux it is also in your distribution's package manager.

Pick the plain FileZilla Client (not FileZilla Server or Pro), and decline any bundled offers in the installer.

2Set up the connection

  1. 01Open FileZilla and choose File → Site Manager.
  2. 02Click New site and give it a name, for example "GetData request".
  3. 03Set Protocol to SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol. Never choose "FTP - File Transfer Protocol".
  4. 04Enter the Host and set Port to 22.
  5. 05Set Logon Type to Normal.
  6. 06Enter your User and Password.
  7. 07Click Connect.
Protocol
SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol
Host
The host shown on your request page (or sent by the GetData team), e.g. u123456.your-storagebox.de
Port
22
Logon Type
Normal
User
Your username, e.g. u123456-sub3
Password
The password you generated on the platform (or received from the GetData team)

SFTP only. Plain FTP sends your password and the data unencrypted. Always check that the protocol says SFTP before you connect.

3First connection: the host key

  1. 01On the first connection FileZilla shows an Unknown host key dialog. This is normal.
  2. 02Check that the dialog names a host ending in .your-storagebox.de. If it shows any other host, click Cancel and check the Host field.
  3. 03Tick Always trust this host, add this key to the cache and click OK.

4Download and upload

  • Download: drag files or folders from the right pane (the storage) to the left pane (your computer).
  • Upload (data suppliers only): drag from the left pane to the right pane.
  • Data requester accounts are read-only. Trying to upload or delete shows "permission denied"; that is expected.

5Troubleshooting

Connection timed out

Port 22 is probably blocked by your company firewall. Ask your IT team to allow outgoing TCP connections on port 22 to *.your-storagebox.de.

Authentication failed

The password was replaced (each new password you generate replaces the previous one) or access was closed or has expired. Check the status on your request page and generate a new password if access is open.

Too many connections

The storage allows at most 10 connections at the same time. In FileZilla choose Edit → Settings → Transfers and set Maximum simultaneous transfers to 2–4.

Permission denied when uploading or deleting

Data requester accounts are read-only: you can download, but not upload, rename or delete. This is expected.

Interrupted transfer

Reconnect and transfer the same files again. FileZilla resumes where it stopped: when it asks what to do with existing files, choose Resume or Overwrite if size differs.

Still stuck? Contact the GetData team. Data requesters find their connection details on My Requests.
