De-identification of Medical Imaging, Explained
GetDATA Team · · 1 min read
Why de-identification matters
Before imaging data can be shared for research, identifying information must be removed — both from DICOM header tags and from any text burned into the pixels themselves.
The practical checklist
- Strip or replace patient-identifying DICOM tags.
- Detect and redact burned-in annotations on the image.
- Document the method so downstream users can audit it.
GetDATA requests state the anonymisation requirements up front, so providers and researchers share a common compliance baseline.
