Why de-identification matters

Before imaging data can be shared for research, identifying information must be removed — both from DICOM header tags and from any text burned into the pixels themselves.

The practical checklist

  • Strip or replace patient-identifying DICOM tags.
  • Detect and redact burned-in annotations on the image.
  • Document the method so downstream users can audit it.
